Gary Sanchez optioned among several roster moves

The much anticipated arrival of power-hitting prospect Gary Sanchez was short lived as the Yankees announced the catcher has been optioned to Scranton Wilkes-Berre.

The demotion of Sanchez comes after the team announced Friday starting pitcher Luis Severino would be placed on the 15-day DL with a mild right triceps strain. The Yankees have made two corresponding roster moves to replace Severino and Sanchez on the 25-man roster.

The 23-year-old Sanchez started in Friday’s contest vs. the Chicago White Sox for the first time in his career. Batting sixth and used as the designated hitter, he went 0-4 with a strikeout.

Signed in on July 2nd, 2009 as a free-agent, Sanchez has moved his way up the system, but it seems as though he will have to wait to become a mainstay in the lineup.

To replace Sanchez and Severino on the active roster are a pair of right-handed pitchers in Chad Green and Conor Mullee.

Green, 24, started the season in Triple-A with Scranton and compiled a 2-3 record with a 1.22 ERA in seven starts. Not earning much run support, the right-hander has tossed 37 innings while striking out 36 and walking only 12 batters.

The 28-year-old Mullee began the 2016 campaign in Double-A with the Trenton Thunder. The right-handed reliever performed to a 3-0 record and a 1.02 in Triple-A after he was called up from Double-A after just one start.

The starting pitching depth has been tested already this year for the Yankees, and with Severino heading to the DL, the team will lean on Green to provide depth and chew up innings. Mullee appeared in 11 games out of the bullpen in the minors with 17.2 innings logged.

The team also announced the transfer of infielder Greg Bird and pitcher Bryan Mitchell to the 60-day disabled list.Â
