Gary Sanchez withdraws from WBC consideration

Gary Sanchez has decided he will not be competing in the 2017 World Baseball Classic for the Dominican Republic.

Sanchez had originally told Dominican team officials that he would play for them in the WBC this spring but has since decided to forego the tournament and focus all of his efforts with the Yankees in spring training.

As first reported by Yankees beat reporter Sweeny Murti, Sanchez spoke about the situation at the Thurman Munson Awards dinner in New York City.

Coming off of his gigantic rookie campaign, where Sanchez hit .299 with 20 home runs and 42 RBI in only 53 games, the young catching phenom has shown a ton of maturity and a strong commitment to his team by agreeing to solely work out with them in spring training.

In a time of uncertainty featuring a lot of young arms within the rotation, having Gary available for all of spring training to work with them is a major plus for the Yankees.

Sanchez is the second Yankee to reconsider his WBC status as Masahiro Tanaka withdrew from playing for Team Japan in January. As is stands, the only Yankees’ players still set to compete in the WBC are shortstop Didi Gregorius for the Netherlands and Dellin Betances for the Dominican Republic.

Sanchez says he will begin working out with the team in Tampa, when pitchers and catchers report on February 14th.
