Girardi Stands by Stephen Drew at Second

The Yankees and Joe Girardi are continuing to back their offseason signee of Stephen Drew. Despite his slow start to spring training, Girardi said “We signed (Stephen Drew) to be our second baseman.”

For all the fans out there wanting to see the Yankees give the young guys such as Jose Pirela or Rob Refsnyder a shot to win the job looks like will have to wait for a mid season call-up or 2016.

The plan is for a new middle of the infield with Drew at second and Didi Gregorius as their new shortstop. The two saw their first action together in the field in Monday’s game against the Nationals.

“Our plan is for it to be Stephen,” Girardi said.

The Yankees acquired Drew from the Boston Red Sox last year in a trade with Kelly Johnson. Drew ended the season hitting a horrendous .162 but the Yankee brass felt confident enough in his abilities to resign him to a 1-year, $5 million contract despite the fact that they have Refsnyder and Pirela who seem ready for big league action.

Drew’s only experience at second base was when the Yankees traded for him. He is still learning and getting comfortable with the position but for a team that needs offensive production it makes no sense waiting for him to find his groove.
