Gleyber Torres garners AL Player of the Week honors

Add another achievement to Gleyber Torres‘ young career. The 21-year-old phenom was just named the American League Player of the Week after going 7-for-19 (.368) in six games this past week.

Additionally, Torres belted five home runs and drove in nine runs. He became the youngest player in AL history to homer in four consecutive games. This stretch started when he hit two home runs against the Rangers in the opening game of that series on May 25th, marking his first-ever multi-homer game. After clubbing two more in Arlington, Torres took Jim Johnson deep to lift the Yankees over the Angels, 2-1, in the Bronx. Also over this past week, Torres notched three multi-hit games and crossed the plate a total of five times as the Yankees went an even 3-3 during the stretch.

Currently, Torres leads all AL rookies with 1.8 WAR, 24 RBI and nine home runs (Tyler Austin is second with eight). He owns a .317/.379/.606 slash line, creating a .985 OPS.ย Torres continues to prove he belongs in the Major Leagues with his day-to-day performance. He plays with the confidence of a veteran but the hunger of a rookie. It seems that every other day he is rewriting the record books.

Torres looks to continue this hot streak with a battle against Charlie Morton tonight (7:05 p.m.) in the Bronx. After going through the Astros, the Yankees travel to Baltimore for a three-game series with the Orioles.
