It looked as if Curtis Granderson was about to find his swing. After going 3-for-3 with a homer in the series finale against Baltimore on Wednesday, the Yankees and their fans were feeling good about his presence in the lineup.
Now, the team will have to move on without him. Again. Granderson has been diagnosed with a fracture of the fifth metacarpal, or knuckle, on his left hand.
Granderson was hit on the hand in the fifth inning. He jogged to first and waved off the trainers, and eventually scored on a bases loaded walk. During his trip around the bases, Granderson kept wincing and kept flexing the hand, trying to shake out the pain. After the inning, he went into the tunnel and Ichiro took his spot out in right field.
X-Rays revealed the fracture, which will place Granderson on the DL for a second time this season. He missed the first 38 games of the season after fracturing his forearm off a J.A. Happ fastball in his first at-bat of spring training. No timetable is in place for his return, but you can expect Granderson to be out for an extended period of time.
Granderson, 32, is in the final year of his contract. He was hoping for a big year, but will now find himself on the outside looking in again.
