Hughes to the pen

After the Yankees’ thrilling win against the White Sox Tuesday night, manager Joe Girardi was asked about the upcoming starters for the Yankees as they continue their huge 10 game home-stand. Girardi revealed that Phil Hughes will be sent to the bullpen and David Huff will start on Saturday against the Red Sox.

The move really shouldn’t be a surprise, as Hughes hasn’t won a game since July 2. He’s currently 4-13 with a 4.86 ERA during what will likely be his final year in pinstripes. His last start came yesterday but only lasted 1.1 innings due to a lengthy rain delay.

Hughes is no stranger to the bullpen as Yankee fans fondly remember. He was a force for the team in 2009, going 5-1 with a 1.40 ERA, giving up just 31 hits in 51.1 IP while striking out 65. Hughes was effective because as a reliever, he could come in and empty the tank for an inning rather than try to save himself as a starter.

Huff has been a pleasant surprise for the Yankees this year, going 2-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 16 IP. He has not started a game since October 3, 2012.
