After being sidelined with a concussion and dealing with ongoing concussion symptoms, Jacoby Ellsbury is finally on the road back to joining the Yankees.
According to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders, Ellsbury is set to begin his rehab assignment Saturday night against the Pawtucket Red Sox, weather permitting.
Ellsbury last played on May 24 against the Royals when he rain into the centerfield wall while making a catch. He stayed in the game for the remainder of the inning and eventually left and was diagnosed with a strained neck and concussion. Ellsbury is hitting .281/.349/.422 with four homers and 14 RBI on the season.
The Yankees will have an interesting decision to make when Ellsbury returns. Aaron Hicks has played like an all-star as the everyday centerfielder, slashing .294/.404/.526 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in 58 games. Most likely, Ellsbury will slide into the starting spot again and Hicks will rotate in the outfield to give guys rest as needed.
The Yankees haven’t said how many at-bats Ellsbury will need in the minors. As long as he remains concussion-symptom-free, expect him to return sooner rather than later.
