Jeter heads to the DL

Are we surprised anymore?

Derek Jeter has been placed on the 15-day DL according to Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com. The move is expected to be retroactive to July 12, meaning Jeter could return on July 27 at the earliest although it’s not clear if he will be ready by then. INF/OF Brent Lillibridge has been called up to fill the empty roster spot.

After months of rehab and waiting, Jeter finally appeared in a game on July 11 against the Royals. Towards his final two at-bats, he felt something in his right quad and was eventually removed from the game. He was diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain and was given a full week of rest over the All-Star break. If it were up to Jeter he’d play, but the Yankees are probably being extra cautious so as to not lose him for an extended period of time.

The Yankees schedule coming out of the break is tough, as they face the Red Sox, Rangers and Rays. They will be without Jeter for at least eight of those 10 games, making this stretch the most important of the season so far.
