Jeter to begin rehab assignment Saturday

Derek Jeter has taken a major step towards returning to the Bronx.

Today, the Yankees announced that the Captain will begin a rehab assignment starting on Saturday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Jeter, who’s been recovering from a fractured ankle all season, is scheduled to play at least five innings at shortstop against Lehigh Valley.

Jeter had been working out in Tampa at the Yankees’ minor league complex, taking batting practice and fielding ground balls. On Wednesday, he was cleared to run the bases – the last hurdle a player is usually faced with before going on a rehab assignment. The Yankees have been taking things slow with the now 39-year-old veteran, since last time Jeter rushed his rehab and ultimately hurt himself again when X-rays revealed another break in the ankle.

The Yankees haven’t placed a return date on Jeter, leaving it open by saying they just expect him after the All-Star break. He will likely need all of the allotted 20 days of the rehab assignment in order to be ready to play. Meanwhile, Alex Rodriguez will continue his rehab with the Tampa Yankees after a couple of games with Single-A Charleston. You can maybe expect both Jeter and A-Rod to be back on the left side of the infield before the month is over.
