Luis Severino called back to the Bronx

Update – 3:27pm

The New York Yankees have officially announced the move to recall Luis Severino from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with a corresponding move to follow later today.

Original post:

The Yankees have reportedly called up right-handed pitcher Luis Severino to fill the spot.

Severino has not pitched in the Bronx since he left the game after just 2.2 innings on May 13 against the Chicago White Sox where he was diagnosed with a mild right triceps strain which placed him on the 15-day DL.  On May 29, he made a rehab start with the Tampa Yankees where he pitched three innings, gave up two hits and had two strikeouts.

Since his rehab start, he has started 10 games for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, posting a record of 7-1 with a 3.25 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 63.2 innings of work.

Severino struggled as a starter with the Yankees, going 0-6 with a 7.71 ERA in seven starts prior to injury.  During a pre-game press conference, manager Joe Girardi was asked if Severino would only be called up as a starter this season.  His answer:

“Not necessarily,” said Girardi.

And that seems to be the case, as it is has been reported he is being promoted to pitch out of the bullpen.

Stay tuned for updates on a corresponding move.
