Market for Aroldis Chapman heating up

The market for flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman is beginning to heat up, and a handful of people around baseball think he could get dealt by the end of this weekend, according to Peter Gammons. Gammons did not specify who is specifically involved in trying to obtain the 27-year-old all-star.

The Yankees have been linked to Chapman, most notably prior to this year’s July 31st non-waiver trade deadline. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports tweeted that the Red Sox are beginning to run background checks on Chapman, but says it’s more of a sign of genuine interest than the fact that a deal is imminent. The Reds are in rebuilding mode, and could even part ways with star third-baseman Todd Frazier as well.

The Reds would most likely want young, talented and cheap players in return. A guy like Chapman would add to an already imposing bullpen for the Yankees, but it’s unclear if they have the pieces to pull off a deal. Brian Cashman has already said it’s unlikely that he’ll trade away Greg Bird, Luis Severino and Aaron Judge.

In 2015, Chapman went 4-4 with a 1.63 ERA while striking out 116 in 66.1 innings. He’s compiled at least 33 saves over the last four years.
