Minor League deal for Dan Johnson

The Yankees have signed left-handed hitting infielder/DH Dan Johnson to a minor league deal with an invite to Spring Training. If Johnson makes the team, he will earn $900,000.

Johnson, 33, had eight hits in just 22 at-bats in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox. He can play both corner infield positions, which could be valuable if Mark Teixeira or Kevin Youkilis need a day off.

Yankee fans may remember Johnson best for the game-tying, pinch-hit home run in the ninth inning for the Rays against New York in that magical game 162 in 2011.

If Johnson doesn’t make the 25 man roster, he will be a good addition for the Triple A squad. Last year with the Triple A  Charlotte Knights, Johnson hit .268 with 28 homers and 85 RBIs. He was originally drafted by Billy Beane, and is a product of the moneyball theory: has power and will take his walks.
