Eovaldi, who has already been placed on the disabled list, will undergo two season-ending surgeries: flexor tendon surgery and Tommy John (the second of his career) within the next couple of days.  It is almost certain Eovaldi will miss all of the 2017 season rehabbing the surgery.

“I’m going to go ahead and get both surgeries,” he said during his announcement.  “I tore my flexor tendon off the bone and partially damaged by UCL.  Going to back to the start before Boston, I had general soreness, nothing really to worry about.  It was really just that day, trying to play catch out there I felt like I couldn’t let my fastball go and if I did something bad would happen.”

Eovaldi ends the season with a 4.76 ERA, going 9-8 in 21 starts with 97 strikeouts.

For the first time in his career, he was arbitration eligible in 2016, and was set to be a free agent following the 2017 season.
