Eovaldi, who has already been placed on the disabled list, will undergo two season-ending surgeries: flexor tendon surgery and Tommy John (the second of his career) within the next couple of days. Â It is almost certain Eovaldi will miss all of the 2017 season rehabbing the surgery.
“I’m going to go ahead and get both surgeries,” he said during his announcement. Â “I tore my flexor tendon off the bone and partially damaged by UCL. Â Going to back to the start before Boston, I had general soreness, nothing really to worry about. Â It was really just that day, trying to play catch out there I felt like I couldn’t let my fastball go and if I did something bad would happen.”
Eovaldi ends the season with a 4.76 ERA, going 9-8 in 21 starts with 97 strikeouts.
For the first time in his career, he was arbitration eligible in 2016, and was set to be a free agent following the 2017 season.
