Petit sent down to make room for Whitley

Gregorio Petit was sent down to the minors today to make room for tonight’s starter Chase Whitley.

The news of him being sent down leaves a hole in the Yankees bench. They do not have a backup middle infielder for tonights game.

It seems expected that another move will be coming for the Yankees before tomorrow’s game.

Petit has hit .208 in 13 games this season but has come on of late recording a pair of doubles in his last couple of games.

Whitley gets the call against the Tampa Rays tonight as the Yankees look to increase their first place lead. Whitley was called up to give the Yankees starters, especially Masahiro Tanaka, an extra days rest.

Whitley continued his strong spring in his three starts for Scranton this season. After posting a 1.17 ERA during the spring, he posted a 2.12 ERA in the minors.
