Pettitte to return Monday

Andy Pettitte will be activated on Monday for a start against the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium, according to beat writer Bryan Hoch.

Pettitte, who turns 41 on June 15, has been sidelined since May 16 with a strained trapezius muscle. He threw 75 pitches in a simulated game this week with no issues. So far on the season, he’s 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA over eight starts.

Vidal Nuno is likely headed down to triple-A to make room for either Mark Teixeira or Kevin Youkilis, so Pettitte would take his spot in the rotation even though David Phelps is scheduled to start that day.

This is the second problem Pettitte has had with his back this year, so the Yankees have to be careful with monitoring him in future starts. With Pettitte, Youk and Teix all returning around the same time, the Yankees are getting a much needed shot in the arm.
