Pineda expected to be optioned

Although Michael Pineda has pitched well overall over the course of his rehab, putting up a 2.82 ERA over five outings, he’s expected to be optioned to Triple-A for more refinement – according to the Newark Star Ledger. His 30-day rehab period ends on Monday.

With the injury to David Phelps and the reemergence of Ivan Nova, there really is no place for Pineda on the big league roster right now. Also, Pineda has yet to reach 100 pitches in a game – something the Yankees want to make sure he can do without any problems in his surgically repaired shoulder.

While the organization sees Pineda as a starter in the future, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of a bullpen role in 2013. Expect the talented 24-year-old righty to contribute this summer at some point, but for now, his next start will likely be on Thursday for Scranton.
