Pineda throws light bullpen session

For the first time since landing on the disabled list with a forearm strain in his pitching arm, Michael Pineda threw off of a mound on Monday to test out his arm. The mini bullpen session included 25 pitches of fastballs and changeups. He had no discomfort or issues during the session. Pineda announced he will throw a full bullpen on Thursday. The hard-throwing right hander was placed on the DL July 30th after feeling discomfort in his arm.

The 26-year-old starter was acquired from the Seattle Mariners for catcher Jesus Montero in 2012. Since coming over from the M’s, Pineda has been stellar with a 14-12 record and a 3.15 ERA in 32 games started. This season, the imposing righty has pitched to a 9-7 mark including a 3.97 ERA in 19 starts.

When Pineda has been healthy during his tenure in pinstripes, he has shown flashes of brilliance and dominance. This season, he was looking to establish himself as the teams ace, which he was on track to accomplish before the injury. The Yankees hope to get him back in the rotation in early to mid September in time for the home stretch before the playoffs begin.
