Rays claim Chase Whitley off waivers

The Rays have claimed RHP Chase Whitley off waivers from the Yankees, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.

Whitley, 26, underwent Tommy John surgery in May after going 1-2 with a 4.19 ERA in four starts. A former 15th round draft pick, Whitley provided the Yankees with some flexibility either as a spot-starter or as a long man out of the pen. Over his two years in the majors, he went 5-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 28 games (16 starts).

Whitley isn’t expected to be fully recovered from surgery until late next summer, so he’ll likely start the the season on the 60-day DL for Tampa Bay.
