Padres call Yankees regarding Gleyber Torres

Even with top prospect Gleyber Torres on the shelf, there’s still a dose of ‘Gleybermania’ around Major League Baseball. Especially in the form of trade talks.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the San Diego Padres have called the Yankees about the 20-year-old phenom. The Padres are currently searching for their shortstop of the future and they believe Torres could be the perfect fit. However, the Yankees aren’t interested in trading him.

If the Yankees were interested in trading Torres, who would they ask for in return? Heyman speculates the Yankees could use the services of reliever Brad Hand or third baseman Yangervis Solarte. Hand could help the bullpen, which has atrociously struggled of late. Solarte could be used as a third baseman, especially with Starlin Castro on the disabled list and Chase Headley not having the season the team hoped; Headley currently has a 0.7 WAR through 68 games. Ironically, Solarte was involved in a trade that sent Headley to the Yankees in 2014.

Even if the Yankees were to trade Torres, he wouldn’t be of any use to the Padres this season. Torres is out for the rest of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery to repair a UCL tear in his non-throwing elbow. He’s expected to be ready in time for Spring Training.

During Torres’ short stint in Triple-A, he hit .309/.406/.457 with two homers and 16 RBI in 23 games. Prior to Torres’ promotion, he hit .267/.367/.496 with five homers and 18 RBI in 32 games with Double-A Trenton.

Torres originally came to the Yankees in a trade that sent Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs last season. Adam Warren and Billy McKinney were also dealt to the Bronx.

The Yankees have since re-signed Chapman to a five-year contract worth $86 Million.
