Report: Refsnyder to stay with Yankees beyond break

Rob Refsnyder will stay with the Yankees after the All-Star break, according to Jon Harper of the New York Daily News. The rookie had his first career hit and homerun Sunday vs. the Red Sox. It’s unclear if the young second baseman will have an every day role once play resumes, but it’s widely assumed he will see playing time.

With Stephen Drew hitting just .182 on the season, the Yankees figured they’d give Refsnyder a look over the weekend, especially against Boston’s left-handed pitching. GM Brian Cashman wouldn’t commit to Refsnyder coming out of the All-Star break, but it appears he’s changed his mind for now.

After starting 0-5 to begin his career, Refsnyder’s bat showed life on Sunday when he went 2-3. He even made some nice plays in the field, showing just how far he’s come with his defense.

  1. Drew is an excellent glove man, but since last year’s Allstar break he has batted well under .200. Refsnyder might not match Drew’s glove, but there seems to be a consensus that the young man will hit pretty well in the majors. The Yanks can carry Gregorius hitting .240 if Refsnyder can hit .250 or better. With Drew hitting .182 there are too many outs at the end of the lineup. So, I’d give the kid a chance and let Drew be your backup infielder for the rest of the season, or move him if you can get some young players for him.

  2. Refsnyder is a good looking second basemen but, Stephen Drew should stay as a utility infielder. his glove is great but at 182 does not cut it in the Major Leagues. Here is a point yes, Drew is a good glove man but, you cannot carry a 182 second basemen who does not have a consistent bat.

  3. With Drew’s defensive ability at multiple infield positions, he’s better suited to a utility role at this point. He just doesn’t have enough offense to merit a starting role, no matter how good his glove is. Didi’s at .238 right now, but when you consider how low his average was at the beginning of the season, that .238 is better than it looks. Refsnyder deserves a chance to show he can handle the starting job, let’s see what he can do. Drew has yet to show any offense since the Yanks first acquired him a year ago, enough’s enough.

  4. Drew totally has a consistent bat. 0-30, home run, 0-30, home run, 0-30, home run…

Time to DFA. Plenty of others good utility players out there who aren’t redefining the Mendoza Line.
