Crazier things have happened.
Jose Reyes has cleared waivers and can now be dealt to any team. The Rockies, who acquired Reyes from the Blue Jays in the Troy Tulowitzki deal back in July, are taking calls from interested clubs. One team that has shown at least a little interest is the Yankees, who could obviously afford to take on the remaining $55 million of Reyes’ contract which runs through 2017.
According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Yankees are “poking around” about the 32-year-old shortstop, but it’s not known if the interest will lead to anything. Didi Gregorius has improved leaps and bounds since the beginning of the year, and the Yankees seem to like the current second base situation with Stephen Drew – who showed signs of life last night – and Brendan Ryan. Heyman notes that Reyes moved to second base back in 2004 to accommodate the newly acquired shortstop Kaz Matsui.
While the Rockies were in Queens this week to play the Mets, Reyes commented that he’d love to return to New York. He still has a home in Long Island, and said that winning is the most important thing to him right now. Even though the Rockies aren’t rushing to trade Reyes, they’d likely want to stockpile young pitching to counteract with Coors Field.
