Rob Refsnyder optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre

Prior to today’s game with the Minnesota Twins at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees announced that they’ve optioned infielder Rob Refsnyder to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He’s been reassigned to minor league camp.

Refsnyder spent much of this spring trying outย third base with the hopes of becoming Chase Headley‘s backup, as well as spelling Starlin Castro over at second. At times Refsnyder turned in some good plays at the hot corner, but he made two errors this week which resulted in him getting hit in the face. It appears the Yankees want him to get more reps at the minor league level before calling him up to the big leagues.

The competition for the 25th roster spot is likely now between Pete Kozma and Ronald Torreyes. Both guys have played second, third and short in their careers, even making some appearances in the outfield. Kozma has more major league experience than Torreyes, who made his MLB debut last season with the Dodgers.

With a week left to go until Opening Day, we should know who wins the position soon.
