As Opening Day quickly approaches, the Yankees’ 25-man roster is beginning to take shape. According to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News, Joe Girardi announced that Ronald Torreyes has won the backup infielder job. He’s likely to primarily play behind Chase Headley at third base.
Torreyes was battling with Pete Kozma and Rob Refsnyder for the 25th roster spot. Refsnyder was sent down to the minors to work on his defense at third earlier this week, and Kozma was pretty underwhelming this spring. Entering today, Torreyes was hitting .303 with two RBI in 33 at-bats.
Torreyes, 23, has spent time with the Reds, Cubs, Astros, Blue Jays, Dodgers and Angels organizations. He was acquired by the Yankees in January for Rob Segedin, and then was claimed off waivers by the Angels. The Yankees then selected him back from the Angels in February.
Girardi said he plans to make the bullpen, rotation and backup catcher announcements on Thursday.
