Sabathia expected to land on the DL

Update 4:12 EST: Sabathia will officially be placed on the disabled list with right knee inflammation and will not make the road trip with the team. He will rest his knee and recover. There is a possibility the big lefty misses the rest of the season, according to manager Joe Girardi.

–End of update–

CC Sabathia left in the third inning of Sundays game vs. the Indians after feeling discomfort in his surgically repaired right knee and is expected to be placed on the Disabled List. Sabathia excited the game after talking with manager Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue on the mound.

Sabathia had knee surgery on July 23rd in 2014 to fix his injured right knee. This time around an MRI has not shown any new damage, just a “bad knee,” said Sabathia. GM Brian Cashman talked to reporters and guessed it would be an immediate trip to the DL.

Sabathia is 4-9 with a 5.24 ERA in 23 starts in what’s been an up and down year. Before his knee surgery last season, he went 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in 2014.

The Yankees had originally planned to use a six-man rotation when Michael Pineda comes back this week. However, they’ll move back to five starters with the injury to CC. Bryan Mitchell will slide back into the long reliever role and back up starter when he returns from the DL.
