Slade Heathcott optioned to Triple-A

As the Yankees continue to trim their roster in preparation for opening day, the team announced another roster move on Tuesday afternoon.

According to multiple sources, the team has reassigned outfielder Slade Heathcott to minor league camp, optioning him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

After spending some time in the big leagues last season, Heathcott was in camp this spring looking for an opportunity to make the 25-man roster. It was already a long shot for Heathcott to make the roster this spring due to the influx of outfielders on the active roster, and his struggles offensively definitely didn’t help his case either.

The left-handed hitting outfielder only picked up one hit in 22 plate appearances this spring.Although he struggled offensively this spring, the team still has high hopes for their young prospect. In seven seasons with the Yankees organization, Heathcott has posted a slash line of .267/.340/.392 in 411 career games.

With the logjam of outfielders on the roster, it might be difficult for the Heathcott to crack the 25-man roster unless the team suffers from injuries throughout the season. If the injury bug gives the Yankees problems this season, it’s possible the 25-year-old could get the opportunity to impact the big league club.

With today’s roster move, the team now has 36 players on their active roster. As the spring comes closer to a close, manager Joe Girardi and the organization continue to look for the right mix for their 25-man roster to begin the regular season.
