Starlin Castro gets career hit 1,000

At just 26 years old and in his 7th year in the league, Starlin Castro has already joined the 1,000 hit club. It came in the 7th inning off of Tigers pitcher Logan Kensing. He reached the milestone inΒ 896 games, an average of 181 hits per season. It may not be the most exclusive club in baseball, but it is still an impressive feat which deserves the recognition. What makes his climb to 1,000 even more impressive is that he missed the first month of his rookie year and the last month of 2014 due to injury. He is the fifth youngest player in the last 30 years to reach the plateau.

Castro is no stranger to making history. In his first Major League at bat he sent the ball into the stands, becoming the 106th player in history to hit a homer during their first MLB at bat. By the conclusion of that game, he also set the Major League record for RBIs in a debut with 6. He entered Yankees’ history, as well, by becoming the only player in franchise history to record 7 RBIs in his first 2 games with the team. This also put him in the books with Tino Martinez, Yogi Berra and Babe Ruth as the only Yankees with 7 RBIs in the first 2 games of the season.

“I just want to be the player that I used to be, to show everybody that I can be the player that I am,” Castro said after his 7 RBI game.

Castro’s future in pinstripes is a bright one. He fits right in with the team that owns the history books. Congratulations on number 1,000. Here’s to another 1,000.
