Surgery suggested for Teix

Mark Teixeira met with team doctors yesterday to undergo evaluation on his troublesome right wrist.

The results aren’t good.

Doctors have concluded that the tear in the tendon sheath isn’t healing like it should, and surgery is the recommended action at this time – meaning Teix’s season over. Teixeira, who chose to rest the wrist and rehab through the first three months or so of the regular season, played in just 15 games before experiencing discomfort. He received a cortisone shot and was placed on the DL. However, the wrist hasn’t improved over the last week like the team hoped it would.

This represents another blow to the Yankees organization, which has experienced unprecedented injuries to key players this season. Without Teix’s switch-hitting bat in the lineup, GM Brian Cashman will be busy in trying to come up with a right-hander to compliment Lyle Overbay at first.

Teixeira will meet with the media at 4 pm EST Wednesday afternoon.
