Tanaka has surgery to remove bone spur from right elbow

Yankees right handed starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka underwent arthroscopic right elbow surgery Tuesday to remove a bone spur in his pitching elbow. Tanaka has missed time in the last two season due to elbow and other arm problems, but the team is looking to get a healthy Tanaka back next season. He is expected to make a full recovery and be ready to join the team when spring training starts. The team announced the high-priced starting pitchers injury stems from his pitching days in Japan.

Tanaka’s recovery includes six weeks of exercise and strengthening which will be followed by a pitching program to get him ready for the spring. In his second season, the 26-year-old pitched to a 12-7 record including a 3.51 ERA. During his career with the Yankees, Tanaka is 25-12 with a 3.16 ERA.

The Yankees are looking to get Tanaka back and healthy and give the team another top of the line rotation as the team looks to rebound from their wildcard loss to the Houston Astros. Tanaka signed a seven year, $155 million contract before the 2014 season, and the Yankees are hopeful he can bounce back from the injury and find a groove for the 2016 season and beyond.
