Teixeira’s leg still sore, will not be available vs. Boston

Mark Teixeira was hoping to get back on the field sooner rather than later, but now his return will be put on hold as the switch-hitting first baseman will not be available as the Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox for a three game series starting Monday evening. The power hitter is still experiencing soreness in his injured leg. He will be sent back to New York for more tests.

Before the injury to Teixeira, the gold glove first baseman was having a bounce back season from a year ago, having so far slugged 31 homeruns and drove in 79 runs with a solid .255 batting average. He was well on his way to hit over 40 long balls on the season before he took a foul ball of his right leg that has held him out of the lineup since August 18th.

If the Yankees want to give Greg Bird a day off at first while he is replacing Teix, Alex Rodriguez is a potential replacement at first base for one of the games vs. Boston as he has been taking ground balls.

Bird has filled in nicely for the Bronx Bombers with a .255 average and two homeruns. He has shown flashes of brilliance in the field with his glove as well at first base.

The team hopes to get a healthy Teixeira back soon for a late season division push, as the race for the AL East crown is up for grabs. With a healthy Teix back in the lineup, the Yanks have a better chance to keep pace with the Blue Jays or regain the division lead.
