Tyler Austin adamant about role in the Bronx

Perhaps helping the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders unveil their new alternate Baby Bombers logo sparked a little something in Tyler Austin.

Although it was great to see Austin lend his services to his former club by donning the new Railriders uniform, he expects that to be the last time he wears it.

The young first baseman saw time in the Bronx last season, and that’s exactly where he expects to be on Opening Day.

When speaking with Railriders beat reporter Shane Hennigan, Austin was adamant that he is not going into spring training expecting to be sent back down to Scranton.

While there is an open competition for the starting first baseman duties this spring, the general consensus is that the job is Greg Bird‘s to lose.

Before missing all of last season with an injury, Bird gave Yankees fans a glimpse of what he brings to the table after hitting .261 with 11 homers and 31 rbi in 46 games in 2015.

Austin has been in Tampa as of late, working on several different positions and was quoted when speaking to Hennigan saying, ā€œI want to do anything I can to help the team win. Whatever my role is Iā€™m happy to be part of it.ā€

So while he remains open to any number of roles with the big league club, he doesn’t seem concerned with Bird’s looming presence at first.

After several great years with Mark Teixeira at first, 2017 will begin a new era for the Yankees and an open competition is exactly what the team needs.

Competition breeds success and with two talented young prospects battling it out, the New York Yankees appear to be in a good spot at first base heading into 2017 spring training.
