Winter Meetings: Yankees continue to listen on Miller, Gardner

Although Brian Cashman said recently that Andrew Miller and Brett Gardner will “more likely than not” remain with the team, he’s still shopping the prized assets at the Winter Meetings, which kicked into gear this morning. According to Joel Sherman, the asking price for Miller remains “huge.”

The Astros, who tried to sign Miller last offseason, are said to be interested in the 30-year-old closer. Sherman notes that the Orioles had to give up LHP Eduardo Rodriguez to obtain Miller for the final two months of the season in 2014. The Yankees would be looking for a player similar to Rodriguez – one with high potential and multiple years of team control. Miller has three years, $27M left on his deal.

Gardner has been linked to the Mariners, Indians and now the Cubs. Sherman suggests the Yankees would be interested in a guy like Javier Baez as a power-hitting second baseman, but said the Cubs would most likely want pitching in return if they trade him at all. The Cubs view Gardner as more of a plan-B in case they miss out on signing free agent Dexter Fowler.

Another interesting note from Sherman. He says one rival executive inquired Cashman about Nathan Eovaldi, but talks didn’t progress very far. Although it’s unlikely Eovaldi gets traded, he’s still on the table as Cashman has said he’s willing to talk about everyone.
