Yankees’ Greg Bird continues spring tear at the plate (VIDEO)

Greg Bird’s six home runs weren’t afraid of seven.

The 24-year-old first baseman’s Grapefruit League home run total reached that lucky number in the second inning on Saturday afternoon, as Bird launched an off-speed pitch from Blue Jays’ starter Matt Latos deep into the bleachers at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

Bird, who was announced as the Yankees’ Opening Day first baseman by manager Joe Girardi on Wednesday, has bumped his spring training batting average up to .444, with eight extra-base hits, eight walks and 12 RBI also added to his stat line.

Three days ago, Bird crushed two homers off of Phillies’ starter Vince Velasquez. It was the second time this March in which he’s posted a two-homer game.

“It’s fun to be back playing,” Bird told the New York Daily News. “I know I keep saying that, but I feel good playing and then when I go home and the next day. I didn’t have that for a long time, so I’m just enjoying it.”

Bird’s seven homers leads the entire Grapefruit League.
