MLB hot stove: Yankees expressing interest in David Robertson reunion?

The Yankees have been disinclined to trade a bevy of their top prospects for starting pitching this offseason. Two notable opportunities came and went, as New York refused to budge for White Sox southpaws Chris Sale and Jose Quintana. But if the Yankees still wish to enhance their pitching staff, a trade between Chicago for a reliever could still be made.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Yankees have reportedly expressed interest in a reunion with White Sox reliever David Robertson, but once again, Chicago’s steep price has hampered negotiations.

Per Cafardo’s report:

Robertson is more than available, but the White Sox want a good haul for him. At worst, the White Sox believe Robertson will have a lot of value at the trade deadline, or if a team’s closer goes down. The White Sox and Blue Jays have had discussions this offseason, and the Yankees have at least thought about it, but New York is unwilling to give up the quality prospects the White Sox want. At some point, Robertson will be in greater demand.

This winter, the White Sox have yet to break character in dialogue regarding their select few marketable players. The same can be said about the Yankees’ firm position on their top young talent, as it appears the opportunity cost of a package deal for one arm isn’t beneficial to the franchise’s future plans. But if Robertson’s value depreciates, or the Yankees are hit with bullpen injuries, a combination of Robertson, Dellin Betances and Aroldis Chapman in the late innings could be viable.

Robertson, who turns 32 in April, saved 37 games with a 3.47 ERA in 2016. He’s owed $27 million over the next two seasons.
