Report: Yankees have contacted Aroldis Chapman’s representatives

Before arriving in Scottsdale, Arizona for the General Managers Meetings, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made some phone calls.

According to Brendan Kuty of NJ Advance Media, Cashman has reached out to the representatives of free-agent closer Aroldis Chapman, as well as representatives for “other relievers” which could be right-handers Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon.

“Yup. I’ve started making my phone calls to free agents, Cashman said in Scottsdale on Monday. “I’ve reached out to a number of them.”

Cashman also noted that the franchise hasn’t committed to reliever Dellin Betances as the future closer. In 73 appearances last season, the 28-year-old earned 12 saves and a 3.08 ERA.

“I just want to bring in more talent,” Cashman said. “It’s too early to say who’s going to do what. It depends how the winter goes. He finished the season as our closer. So until or unless I find something better, which is pretty hard to do, but so right now he’d be the closer if the season was starting today but it’s not.”

For nearly four months, the Yankees owned three of baseball’s top relievers in Betances, Chapman, and left-hander Andrew Miller. Cashman ended up trading both Chapman and Miller for a slew of top prospects at the trade deadline.

“It was a pretty rare opportunity for to have those guys at the same time, with Dellin, (Chapman) and Miller combined,” Cashman said. “So that’s a rare occurrence. So certainly the more the merrier. That’s the interest level you want. We just need to build a strong staff one through 12, or one through 13 whatever it’s going to be. We just need to feel that you get high-end everywhere you look, which is what you aspire to do.”

Teams are allowed to talk contract terms with free agents beginning on Tuesday morning.
