Yankees have third-best odds to win World Series in latest season projections

The Yankees have become must-see TV this season, and the latest odds and figures suggest they’ll receive plenty of airtime in late October.

Coming off a five-game win streak after sweeping the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium, New York (37-23) currently has an 83-percent chance of making the postseason and a 60-percent chance of clinching the American League East (best odds in division), according to FiveThirtyEight’s most recent season projections. The biggest spike, however, is the team’s chances at winning the World Series, which now sits at 11-percent — tied with the Washington Nationals for third-highest in baseball.

Based on win-loss simulations, FiveThirtyEight projects the Yankees to finish with 94 regular season wins — a five-win difference from last week’s rankings on June 5. New York outscored Baltimore 38-8 in three games, and have a league-best run differential of plus-115 thru 60 games. It’s the ninth time the Yankees have posted a run differential of plus-115 or higher at this point in the season, and in those past eight seasons, they took home the Commissioner’s Trophy. Following the Yankees’ Opening Day series against Tampa Bay, FiveThirtyEight projected New York to finish with just 79 wins (24-percent chance at postseason, 12-percent chance at division, two-percent at World Series).

Entering Monday, the Yankees lead the Boston Red Sox by four games in the AL East, and FiveThirtyEight has Boston finishing in second place (88-74 predicted record), Tampa Bay in third (82-80), Toronto in fourth (81-81), and Baltimore in last (78-84). The forecast also lists the Houston Astros to win a league-best 102-wins (17-percent chance at World Series) and the Los Angeles Dodgers to win a National League-best 99 games (16-percent chance at World Series).

The Yankees begin a seven-game west coast road trip on Monday night, with three games against the Los Angeles Angels and four against the Oakland Athletics.Â
