Yankees injury update: 9/8/15

On Tuesday afternoon, general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi spoke to the media, giving them updates regarding the status of starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi, first baseman Mark Teixeira, and outfielder Brett Gardner. Unfortunately, there was not much encouraging news regarding the three injuries.

On Monday, the team announced that Eovaldi would be sidelined for at least two weeks with inflammation in his right elbow. Cashman told the media on Tuesday that it was very unlikely that the right-hander will be ready to return during the regular season, and it may still be in question whether or not he will be able to return for the postseason.

Eovaldi was given a PRP shot to help speed up the healing process, but it still appears as if he is about a month away from returning. In his absence, the team announced that Adam Warren will be stretched out to join the starting rotation, allowing the Yankees to stick with the plan of going to a six-man rotation for the final month of the season.

Along with Eovaldi’s injury, Cashman wonders if Mark Teixeira will be able to come back at all during this season. Teixeira has nerve issues in his leg, and is still currently using crutches. He received two injections to “calm the nerve issue,” but it still is in serious doubt whether or not the 35-year-old will be able to return this season.

Teixeira was initially injured on August 17, when he suffered a bone bruise after fouling a pitch off his leg. He was placed on the disabled list last week, but it’s very unlikely that the switch-hitter will be activated when he is eligible to return. Although Gregory Bird has done a nice job in his absence, the Yankees hope that Teixeira could return before the end of the season, as his bat is a major piece in this Yankee lineup.

The injury bug doesn’t stop there, as Brett Gardner has been dealing with a shoulder injury as of late. The injury occurred when the 32-year-old made a catch against the outfield wall the other day, and has been bothering him since. He was given an injection to “calm things down.”

As an official diagnosis, the team is calling it a jammed shoulder, and they also expect that he could possibly be available off the bench tonight if he is needed. Chris Young will get the start in left field tonight, and will most likely see the majority of the playing time until Gardner is ready to return.

This is not a good time for the injury bug to hit a team, but the Yankees are hopeful they can get as healthy as possible for the stretch run, as they look to keep up with the Toronto Blue Jays in the race for the American League East Division crown.
