Nightengale: Yankees interested in David Phelps

In an effort to add pitching prior to the trade deadline, the Yankees are linked as a possible suitor for one of their former players.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees are considered one of the “chief pursuers” for Phelps. Along with the Bronx Bombers, Nightengale lists the Brewers, Cubs, Rangers, Red Sox, and Rockies as other potential suitors.

Phelps is an attractive trade chip, as he is under club control until 2019. In 44 relief appearances this season, the 30-year-old is 2-4 with a 3.45 ERA. He’s a pitcher who could serve multiple roles for a team looking to add pitching depth.

The Yankees interest in Phelps shouldn’t be a surprise. He was drafted by the Yankees in the 14th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft, and spent his first three big league seasons in pinstripes.

In 87 games as a Yankee, he posted a 15-14 record with a 4.21 ERA. He was a “jack-of-all-trades” for them, as he pitched in virtually any role the club needed him to. After the 2014 season, he was involved in the trade that brought Nathan Eovaldi and Garrett Jones to the Bronx.

Phelps is an interesting trade candidate for the Yankees. The organization could look for a reunion, as he could provide some much needed pitching depth down the stretch. His versatility could be key, as he has shown he is capable of pitching in various roles.
