Yankees news and notes: players on the move

The New York Yankees have made a move. However, it is not the move you would expect on this trade deadline day. The team announced today that they have designated Garrett Jones for assignment to make room for newly acquired Dustin Ackley.

Jones hit .215 with five home runs in limited playing time in the Bronx. The Yankees believe Ackley has the versatility to play first base. However, Ackley has only played first once this season while also manning second base, and all three outfield position. The Yankees also announced that they have activated Slade Heathcott from the disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton.

Also, Chris Capuano has cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A to join Heathcott. Heathcott and Capuano will be options come September as depth guys for the Yankees. Both have had big league time this season. Heathcott showed some signs of a high energy guy with potential in the bat.

Veteran pitcher Capuano struggled mightily with the Yankees giving up more an a run an inning with his time in New York.
