Yankees recall RHP Luis Cessa, send down RHP Nick Goody

On Sunday morning, the New York Yankees announced that they have recalled right-hand pitcher Luis Cessa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  In a corresponding move, they announced that have optioned right-hand pitcher Nick Goody to Triple-A.

With the Yankees above .500 again, a roster move to strengthen the bullpen is not surprising given how Goody has struggled on the season for the Yankees.  In 22 innings pitched over 19 games, Goody has allowed 12 runs on 25 hits, five of which came by the long ball, and is sporting a 4.91 ERA and 1.364 WHIP.

Cessa will rejoin the Yankees after pitching nearly three weeks in Triple-A, as he was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/WB on June 7.

Since joining the RailRiders, Cessa has started three games.  The first, he only pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.  In his following two starts on June 15 and June 21, he pitched 5.0 innings and 5.1 inning respectively and allowed seven hits and just one run with eight strikeouts over both games.

Cessa has only pitched in three games for the Yankees this season, and has looked good in limited work.  In seven innings, he has five strikeouts and has allowed two runs off of two solo home-runs, with five total hits allowed.

Girardi has indicated that he will look to use Cessa as the long man rather than using Richard Bleier, whom he would rather use as a lefty specialist.  With Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman having worked three of the last four nights and knowing how Girardi works, it is likely a couple or all of them will get the night off, paving the way for Cessa this afternoon.
