While a handful of Yankees prospects are receiving the opportunity to showcase their abilities on baseball’s biggest stage, one pair of youngsters will also appear on a major league field — just during the All-Star break.
23-year-old pitcher Domingo Acevedo and 19-year-old outfielder Esteven Florial will play for the World Team during the All-Star Futures Game at Marlins Park in Miami on July 9, two days before the Midsummer Classic.
Acevedo, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound righty who can dial his fastball into the triple digits, began the 2017 season with High-A Tampa, but his chances at a big league promotion aren’t far out of reach. Acevedo only pitched seven games before he was promoted to Double-A Trenton in mid-May, and he completed only six starts with Trenton before reaching Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in mid-June. All together, Acevedo is 3-5 with a 4.02 ERA this season, with 100 strikeouts, 89 hits, 33 earned runs and 21 walks in 94 innings.
As for Florial, a 6-foot-1, 185-pounder, the Yankees have been impressed with his speed, athleticism, and plate discipline. While he throws right, he swings left, and in 66 games (285 PA) with Low-A Charleston, Florial has slashed .308/.386/.524 with 10 home runs, 33 RBI, 16 doubles, four triples, 13 stolen bases and 32 walks.
According to MLBPipeline, Acevedo is ranked as the Yankees’ 12th-best prospect, while Florial ranks 15th. Their scouting reports can be found here.
