Yankees to acquire shortstop Didi Gregorius

The Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have an agreement in place for a three-way deal that will send shortstop Didi Gregorius to the Yankees, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. In return, Shane Greene goes to Detroit, and Robbie Ray to Arizona. Sweeny Murti of WFAN originally reported on the framework of the deal.

Gregorius, who turns 25 in February, gives the Yankees much needed youth in the infield. He has a good glove, but his lefty-bat still needs some work. Over three seasons in the majors, he’s compiled a slash of .243/.313/.366 with 13 homers and 57 RBI. Gregorius is under team control through 2019, which will give the Yankees a good look to see if he can handle the job left by the retired Derek Jeter.

Greene, 26, gives the Tigers a solid option out of the fifth spot in the rotation. He went 5-4 with a 3.78 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) in 2014. Greene is controllable through the 2020 season, which should help the Tigers when David Price and Rick Porcello become free agents after 2015.

While no one can replace Jeter, the Yankees hope Gregorius’ bat can develop with time. Since Rob Refsnyder appears to be on the way up, the Yanks have the makings of a youthful double play tandem, something they haven’t had in quite some time. GM Brian Cashman will look to add more pieces in the upcoming days as the Winter Meetings approach.
