Yankees trade Yefry Ramirez to the Orioles

Prior to the big trade for Sonny Gray, the Yankees made a minor move to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.

The Yankees announced that they traded right-handed pitcher Yefry Ramirez to the Baltimore Orioles. In exchange for Ramirez, the Yankees received international signing bonus pool money.

Ramirez was named an Eastern League All-Star this season. In 18 starts for Double-A Trenton, the right-hander has a 10-3 record with a 3.41 ERA. He compiled a high strikeout rate, as he has fanned 91 batters in just 92.1 innings of work.

The trade benefits the Yankees in multiple ways. With the trade for Gray, the Yankees needed to clear a 40-man roster space, a spot that this trade helped cleared. In both trades prior to the deadline, the Yankees also acquired international signing bonus money that could benefit them in the near future.

Why is international signing bonus pool money so important? With Japanese superstar Shoehei Otani expected to be posted this offseason, the Yankees will have additional funds to work with to sign him, should they choose to pursue him.
