Yanks interested in playing in Cuba next spring

In an attempt to expand the MLB exhibition season to Cuba, the Yankees are one of several teams under consideration to play the last part of their spring training games in Cuba, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. Commissioner Rob Manfred commented Tuesday, “I hope so,” when asked about the thought of the MLB expanding to Cuba to play spring training games.

Due to the final touches being worked out because of the United States and Cuba ties this year, the MLB is waiting for the all clear sign from the U.S. Government to allow teams to play in Cuba.

The report is many teams are pulling themselves out of consideration for the chance to play in Cuba, but the Yankees are still adamant about playing out of the country. If the MLB is given clearance to send teams to Cuba, a lottery system would likely be put in place to select the two teams to play.

The only team since 1999 to play an exhibition game in Havana was the Orioles when they took on the Cuban National Team.

The Bronx Bombers will be looking to get a good look at this years team during spring training, and tossing in a bit of extra travel to Cuba would present a potentially fun challenge to the team, even though they would be playing against another MLB team.
