Derek Jeter addresses gift basket rumors in sit down with Joe Buck

So, Joe Buck has a new show and Derek Jeter was his first guest. First of all, his show is only on DirectTV so I guess I’ll have to wait until the next time I fly United because that is the only time I watch DirectTV. Secondly, I hope for his sake that this show goes better than his first show on HBO. (If you don’t know what I’m talking about just Google “Joe Buck HBO” and enjoy.)

Getting to the good stuff. Buck sat down with Jeter for a lengthy interview and got him to address some of the more ridiculous rumors from Jeter’s career:

Of course Jeter denied the rumors. It’s not like an engaged 40 year old is going to announce that he used to give gift baskets full of his own memorabilia to girls that he slept with. Plus, if the rumors were true, I think one of those gift baskets would have surfaced by now. As for the cell phone rumor; I always believed that one because you never saw pictures of Jeter surface. Today its so easy to catch people in compromising situations, and if you believe that Jeter did not confiscate people’s phones then you believe he never did anything compromising… and that would mean he isn’t human (which I’m also not ruling out). If he did take people’s phones before entering his house, I don’t think that would be a huge deal.

Regardless, even the fact that he addressed it shows how much Jeter has changed in retired life. He never would have even done this interview with Buck if he was still playing, and if he did, that topic would have been off limits.

Jeter was always guarded with the media when he was playing, which was smart in a city like New York. He certainly enjoyed himself off the field and was linked to numerous A-list celebs over the years, but he never let his personal life get in the way of his professional life, which we see happen time and time again with athletes today. More recently however we are seeing a different side of Jeter, something fans have been long interested in seeing.

Another topic discussed was Jeter’s desire to eventually own a Major League Baseball team. He said, “That’s the ultimate goal. I wouldn’t be a figurehead, I’d be involved. I want to make the decisions. I will one day.”

So it sounds like if Jeter does in fact own a team it won’t be in a Magic Johnson type role, but rather in a Michael Jordan type role. The obvious question is what team he would own. Unless the Steinbrenner family is interested in selling sometime soon, it probably won’t be the Yankees.
