Game 71: Cano Breaks The Tie

New York Yankees 6 — New York Mets 5

Robinson Cano broke the tie game and gave the Yankees the 6-5 victory to take the Citi Field part of the Subway Series over the New York Mets.

The Yankees had to deal with the seemingly un-hittable R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets. Dickey entered tonight’s game with an 11-1 record and an ERA of 2.00 with two one-hitters under his belt this season. It took just 3 innings for the Yankees to end Dickey’s consecutive innings without an earned run streak at 44.2 as Teixeira hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Nick Swisher took Dickey deep for a three-run home run. By the end of Dickey’s 6 innings of work, the Yankees scored 5 runs off of him and this was his shortest outing since mid-May. However, Dickey did not factor into tonight’s decision. A Mets comeback fueled by poor defense gave them a second chance as they turned to one of the worst bullpens in baseball. In Miguel Batista’s second inning of work, Robinson Cano led off the 8th inning with a home run to center field just to the left of the Citi Field Home Run Apple and gave the Yankees the lead and eventual win.

CC Sabathia took the mound for the Yankees in the rubber game and his 5.2 innings of work were not helped out defensively. Three errors led to 4 of Sabathia’s 5 runs allowed to go unearned. Catcher Chris Stewart made two throwing errors on steal attempts of second base and Robinson Cano made a fielding error that also led to an unearned run. Cory Wade came on to try and help Sabathia finish the 6th inning but allowed the game-tying run to score. After the lead was retrieved by Cano’s solo home run, Boone Logan pitched a solid 1.1 innings to get the win. David Robertson pitched a dangerous 0.2 of an inning as a single, stolen base, and a balk put the tying-run on third base but he got the out he needed to finish the 8th. Rafael Soriano faced the game-winning run and managed to finish off the game and get the save and end the Yankees 3-game losing streak.
