Game 73: Hughes Solid Through 8

Cleveland Indians 4 — New York Yankees 6

Phil Hughes threw 8 scoreless en route to a 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.

Phil Hughes spread 6 hits over 8 scoreless innings for another start without a home run. Through his 8 scoreless innings, he hardly faced any difficult spots. The most difficult spot for Hughes was in the 6th inning when back-to-back one-out singles put two on with one out but he struck out the 3 and 4 hitters of the Cleveland lineup to escape the lone jam of the game. With the pitch count at 111 for Hughes, he was relieved by Cory Wade in a 6-run lead. Getting just 2 outs, Wade surrendered 4 runs and could not finish the game. With the lead at just 2, Rafael Soriano was called upon to get the final out and get the unusual one out save.

The Yankees offense has shown a determination to work long at-bats that drive the opposing starting pitcher’s pitch count up. In the 2nd inning, Chris Stewart and Curtis Granderson brought in three runs, Granderson’s being a two-run single with the bases loaded. After 6 innings and 4 runs off of starting pitcher Justin Masterson, his pitch count was at 114 pitches (more than Hughes threw in 8 innings) and he was forced out of the game. The Yankees would end up putting two more runs, including a home run to the second deck in left field by Alex Rodriguez.
