Injury updates: Kelley to DL, waiting game for Beltran

When it rains bad news, it pours. In an update to yesterday’s news

Despite Mark Teixeira‘s “legs feeling like cement,” he remains on the team and in today’s lineup, batting fourth as the designated hitter. Everyone who watched the end of yesterday’s game is aware of how he is running.

The already taxed bullpen took one more blow. Shawn Kelley has been dealing with some back soreness and it appears to have reached an intolerable amount of pain, he is headed to the 15-day disabled list with what is listed as a lumbar spine injury. Taking his place on the roster is outfielder Zoilo Almonte. The upside of this disabled stint is that it is retroactive to his last appearance (May 6), meaning he could return within a week. In 16 games, Kelley pitched 15.1 innings to a 3.52 ERA with 16 strikeouts.

The return of Zoilo is likely in part to Carlos Beltran‘s injury that forced him out of yesterday’s game when John Ryan Murphy pinch hit for him. Carlos Beltran’s hyperextended right elbow is a result of bone spurs he unknowingly had in his elbow. He will receive a cortisone shot to treat it. If the pain continues after two to three days, it is possible that surgery will be necessary.

Ichiro Suzuki is also unavailable tonight. The lower back injuryΒ  during his time in Milwaukee prolongs. It does not look to be serious or worthy of a disabled list stint so that is a positive among many negatives.

Hopefully the Yankees can manage to win despite injuries so that the team can return to full strength and make a push for the division and more.
