On This Day in History | 1946

On May 28, 1946, Yankee Stadium hosted it’s first night game. While the outcome of the game would not be what the fans were hoping for, a 2-1 loss (box score) to the Washington Senators, the Yankees would go on to have many, many memorable games under the lights in the Bronx in both the old stadium, and the new one.

Snuffy Stirnweiss would lead the offense with 2 hits, and the only run of the game. Cuddles Marshall would get the loss for the Yankees throwing 7 innings, with 2 earned runs, and two strike outs. Control problems were the issue for Marshall as he walked 5 Senators on the day. Dutch Leonard would go on to earn the complete game win for the Senators, throwing 9 innings of 6-hit, 1-run baseball.
