Piniella, Steinbrenner headline 2017 Today’s Game Era Ballot

Former Yankees player/manager Lou Piniella and owner George Steinbrenner headline the 2017 Today’s Game Era Ballot.

The Today’s Game Era Ballot is one of four Era committees created by the Baseball Hall of Fame. This ballot gives Hall of Fame consideration to managers, executives, umpires, and former players who have been retired for more than 15 seasons.

Any candidate who receives votes on 75 percent of the vote will be inducted into Cooperstown on July 30, 2017. The year’s committee is comprised of 16 members.

The Yankees organization is well-represented on this list:

Piniella, 73, played 18 seasons in the big leagues, but is included on this list for his work as a manager.

In 23 seasons as the skipper for the Cubs, Mariners, Rays, Reds and Yankees, Piniella won 1,835 games, which ranks him 14th on the all-time list. The three-time Manager of the Year won the 1990 World Series with the Reds, and won an American League record 116 games with the 2001 Mariners. Over his managerial career, Piniella guided his clubs to seven postseason appearances.

Steinbrenner purchased the Yankees in 1973, and brought a winning style to the Bronx. In the early 1970s, Steinbrenner played a major role in adopting baseball’s free agency era, which was crucial in allowing Steinbrenner to acquire the necessary talent to help make the Yankees’ organization successful.

In 37 full years as the team’s owner, Steinbrenner’s Yankees complied a .565 winning percentage, as the Bronx Bombers went on to win World Series titles and 11 American League Pennants during his tenure.

Along with Piniella and Steinbrenner, the Today’s Game Era Ballot features 10 people who have impacted the sport of baseball. This list includes Harold Baines, Albert Belle, Will Clark, Orel Hershiser, Davey Johnson, Mark McGwire, John Schuerholz and Bud Selig.

The vote will take place on December 5 at the Baseball Winter Meetings in National Harbor, Md. Any players voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame will be announced by Major League Baseball on January 18, 2017.
