According to Ken Rosenthal, major league sources have said that shortstop Derek Jeter will rejoin the Yankees and is expected to be in the starting lineup at either shortstop or designated hitter against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday afternoon.

The 39-year-old shortstop will be making his 2013 debut after undergoing ankle surgery last October. He suffered a setback in April and doctors discovered an additional crack near the initial break. He played in four rehab games with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders this week.

In Jeter’s absence, the Yankees had numerous players play the position. Eduardo Nunez, Jayson Nix, Reid Brignac, Alberto Gonzalez, Reid Brignac, and Luis Cruz all had playing time at shortstop. These six players combined for a .210 average with just two home runs and 25 runs batted in.
